Things didn’t always go as plan. My partner and childhood friend, Jenna decided that her family demands had to take precedence over our business and stepped away from Canned Ham Collectables. Some of my initial purchases turned out to be “flops” and had to be sold for cost or even were sent back to the donation box. I paid too much for some items I loved. I grew too attached to a few things, which have found their way into our home. I passed up items that I later realized were treasures. And I certainly spent too much time fixing up some things that put my profits in the red after factoring in my and my husband’s time.
Our next-door neighbors have been tolerant and even nice about our junkyard-reminiscent driveway. My family, friends, and co-workers have come through for me time and again with loading and unloading even at 7 am on a rainy Sunday morning. My son Grant, son-in-law Blake and dear friend Benna have been faithful helpers. My daughter Natalie has encouraged me and helped with web design and marketing ideas. My niece Winter and her husband came by one Sunday to gallantly help lift, carry and set up for the day and returned in the afternoon to do it again. My husband has been the best go-fix-this and brake-for-this-yard-sale guy that a wife could ever ask for. The other vendors I have come to know continue to offer great advice and help, and I am glad to say I have made a few new friends this year.
So a year has passed, some things worked out as planned, some didn’t. The main thing is that I am having a lot of fun. People still delight in my discoveries as much I do in discovering them. Thanks to everyone; friends, family, fellow vendors and customers for seeing Canned Ham Collectables through its first year!
